Sri Lanka economic crisis LIVE Updates: Celebrations broke out across the country after Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned as President on Thursday. His resignation letter was read out in Parliament on Saturday.

Sri Lanka economic crisis LIVE Updates: Parliament met in a brief session on Saturday to announce vacancy in the presidency following the resignation of Gotabaya Rajapaksa. A report by news agency PTI said the session lasted for 13 minutes and Dhammika Dassanayake, Secretary General of Parliament, announced the vacancy for the post of president.

On Friday, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was appointed as the interim President. Wickremesinghe said he would work to strengthen Parliament’s powers via constitutional adjustments.

Celebrations broke out across Sri Lanka after Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned as President on Thursday. Rajapaksa and his cabinet were blamed for the economic crisis in Sri Lanka, against which citizens have been protesting for months.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s top court on Friday barred former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa from leaving the country without permission until July 28.

Speaking to news agency ANI cricketer Chamika Karunaratne said, “We have to go for practices in Colombo & to different other places as club cricket season is going on but I have been standing in queue for fuel for the past 2 days. I got it filled for 10,000 which will last another 2-3 days only.”
